Hands-on with SuperTooth Disco2

Image

Move over Jambox, there’s a new portable audio contender entering the market. The Disco2, shown off at this week’s CTIA 2012, is SuperTooth’s smaller, more compact sequel to its O.G. 28 watt powerhouse of the same name and a direct threat to the niche market occupied by Jawbone. Housed in a colorful hourglass-shaped design that should please the style-minded, this rechargeable speaker connects over Bluetooth to your device of choice, outputting 16 watts of 360 degree sound through two speakers and a subwoofer. It’s set to hit the market mid-month priced at $99, but for consumers that want a bit more of an aural punch, an additional unit can actually be paired up to deliver a fuller stereo effect. Judging from its powerful performance on the noisy showroom floor, however, you’d probably be fine with just the one. Click on below to take a better look at the company’s curvy offering.

Nuggets’ big men come up big, beat Lakers 99-84

(AP) ? The Denver Nuggets swore if they could just play with a lead, this first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers would be a whole lot different.

When Danilo Gallinari made a reverse layup four minutes into the game, the Lakers trailed for the first time in the playoffs and the energized Nuggets used an astonishing 28-2 run to take control in their 99-84 win Friday night.

The fresh-legged and baby-faced Nuggets can tie up the best-of-seven series Sunday night at the Pepsi Center, where the grizzled but gassed Lakers will try to rebound from a 3-for-14 fourth-quarter shooting performance that doomed their comeback attempt.

Ty Lawson scored 25 points, setting the tone offensively, and JaVale McGee and Kenneth Faried had double-doubles while stifling Andrew Bynum, who was shut out in the first half. Gallinari helped hound Kobe Bryant into a 7-for-23 shooting night.

“The game for us is all about our energy and our enthusiasm,” Nuggets coach George Karl said. “It’s not complicated for us. When we play poorly we don’t play with enough energy, we don’t push the pace and we take too many jump shots.”

That wasn’t the case in Game 3.

“It was a fun win for me,” Karl beamed. “I can’t remember a win as much as I enjoyed this thing.”

Neither could McGee.

“I was real timid in the first two games and I just wanted to be extremely aggressive in this game,” said McGee, who had 16 points and 15 rebounds to go with Faried’s 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Together, they contained Bynum, who finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds but was shut out in the first half, when the Nuggets raced to a 41-17 lead in the second quarter.

“It was huge,” Lawson said. “Every game we played against the Lakers we were down. We were down early. We were down big. We were trying to fight our way back into the game, so we made a point that we wanted to come out early and see how they did with a deficit.

“They reacted kind of well to it but we hung on.”

Denver led 55-39 at halftime. The Lakers cut their deficit to four points in the third quarter but couldn’t get any closer and faded in the fourth.

“That’s a big hole to put yourself in, to be down 24, especially in the first half, is tough playing against a team that’s desperate,” Lakers coach Mike Brown said.

Bynum’s putback with 1:18 left in the third quarter not only pulled the Lakers to 68-64 but his inadvertent elbow on the play broke Al Harrington’s nose. He didn’t return, but the Nuggets went on a 12-5 run to regain their composure and control of the game.

“I felt like they played really well,” Bryant said. “They played with a lot of intensity and for us it was good learning experience. I’m proud of the way we battled to get back into the game. We just couldn’t get over the hump.”

Karl said he wasn’t sure but suspected Harrington will be back for Game 4.

Bryant finished with 22 points after scoring 31 and 38 points in the two wins at Staples Center.

The Nuggets used a 28-2 run spanning the first and second quarters to take a stunning 38-14 lead. Lawson scored 13 of the Nuggets’ points as they scored 20 of the final 22 points of the first quarter, then teamed with Corey Brewer and Harrington on a trio of 3-pointers to stretch Denver’s lead to 41-17.

“Everything was going right,” McGee said. “We were passing the ball the right way, we were running, everything was working.”

Nothing was going right for the Lakers and their stars.

“I wasn’t on my sweet spots,” Bryant said. “They tried to keep me more on the perimeter. I wasn’t in the post a lot. I lived at the elbow the first two games and we got away from that a little bit in the second half. Pau (Gasol) as well. We saw him on the perimeter way too much. We can’t do that. We have to stick to our ground and pound game.”

NOTES: Brown said he expects F Metta World Peace to be rested, not rusty when his suspension is over: “He’s working hard. He’s engaged. I think he’ll be fine. Obviously, you never know, but he’s working his tail off and he is engaged and that’s all you can ask for during this period.” … The Lakers have only squandered one 2-0 series lead, losing to the Phoenix Suns in 1993. … The Nuggets’ seven turnovers were one shy of their all-time playoff low.

Space Shuttle Enterprise flyover wows New Yorkers (+video)

Perched atop a modified 747 jumbo jet, the Space Shuttle Enterprise greeted the Big Apple by zooming past the Statue of Liberty and flying along the Hudson River.

Hundreds of space shuttle fans braved the chilly temperatures and biting wind Friday morning (April 27) along the Hudson River here to catch a glimpse of NASA’s prototype orbiter as it flew past the museum it will soon call home.

Enterprise, the agency’s original test shuttle,?flew to New York today?from Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., atop a modified Boeing 747 jet. Before landing at New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport, the piggybacking duo flew over the Statue of Liberty, then followed the Hudson River past the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, where it will soon be placed on public display.

The shuttle flyover attracted fans of all ages, who gathered around the Intrepid museum and Pier 86 on Manhattan’s west side to witness the historic event.

“How often do you get to see something like this ? a shuttle on piggyback coming down the Hudson River?” said Kenneth Irvin, who came with his wife, Ceil, from Long Island. [Photos: Final Voyage of Space Shuttle Enterprise]

As?Enterprise?and its chaperone flew overhead, the crowd, which was made up of men, women and children of all ages, erupted into cheers and applause.

“It was absolutely amazing to see it like that,” Adam Schechter said shortly after Enterprise’s first pass. Schechter carried his young son, Harry, and spoke energetically about his experiences with the space shuttles, including seeing the STS-97 launch of the shuttle Endeavour in November 2000.

“It was amazing, and the loudest thing I ever heard in my life,” Schechter told SPACE.com.

He also recounted a visit he and his son took to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., where Enterprise had previously been on display since 2003.

The Samsung Galactic Empire

This past week has been especially kind to Samsung. Big sales numbers were followed by the unveiling of the Galaxy S III, the company’s latest flagship phone and one that could very well own the market this summer. The S III runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Google’s operating system and one that up to this point hasn’t taken residence on a very large number of phones.

Beastie Boys founding member Adam Yauch, a.k.a. MCA, died Friday (May 4) at age 47 after a nearly three-year battle with cancer. News of the MC’s death quickly spread across the Internet, and the tributes that flooded Twitter showed the impact his music had on artists from all areas of entertainment.

“Crushed to hear the news of Adam Yauch’s passing,” Justin Timberlake tweeted. “A true pioneer of art. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.#RIPMCA”

He’s not the only member of the pop world feeling the loss: The Ryan Tedder-led band, OneRepublic, also expressed their shock over his death. “R.I.P Adam MCA,” the band wrote. “Beastie Boys remain untouchable.”

DJ Steve Aoki expressed his sadness, writing, “Ahhh man… rest in peace to the one and only MCA. wow. terrible news.”

“Rip MCA,” the Backstreet Boys chimed in. “Our thoughts are with you and your family. #BeastieBoys4Life.”

Given how influential the band had been across all genres and their own roots in rock, the reaction has been overwhelming in the rock-and-roll community. “Rest In Peace Adam Yauch /MCA,” Blink-182′s Travis Barker tweeted. “4ever somebody i looked up to & had the pleasure of meeting. Damn this bums me out, we lost one of the best.”

Fellow drummer Chad Smith, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, added, “Wow, lost another brother..sail on MCA.”

Jimmy Eat World tweeted, “We’re very saddened by the passing of Adam Yauch. RIP MCA. You’ll be missed.” They also tweeted a link to the Beasties’ track “Gratitude,” from their 1992 album, Check Your Head.

“We’re sad to learn about the death of MCA,” Linkin Park tweeted. “Our condolences to the Beastie Boys and Adam’s family.”

On top of his music, Yauch had also become a film director and producer over the past decade, so Hollywood felt the loss as well. “RIP Adam Yauch,” director Kevin Smith tweeted. “You made my teenage years more fun and your art made it easier for me to do what I do. For a Beastie, you sure were a beaut.”

“RIP Adam Yauch (MCA of the Beastie Boys). He was a super-genius, a visionary and, most importantly, a really good person,” Rainn Wilson noted.

“Rest in peace Adam Yauch,” Marlon Wayans added. “Beastie Boys were always the ‘coolest whiteboys’ when I was growing up. They erased color lines the opposite way.”

Share your condolences for MCA’s family, friends and fans in the comments below.

Tune in to MTV tonight at 8 p.m. as Sway hosts an hour-long special celebrating the life and career of Adam “MCA” Yauch, including the late Beastie Boy’s biggest moments and remembrances from his friends and peers. Check out mtvU now for the Beastie Boys’ classic music videos.
